Providence police said they arrested a man they say was attempting to steal a red light camera.

Police took into custody Andrew Baker, 57, after observing the man taking apart a red light camera at Charles Street and Branch Avenue.

Police said Baker told them since the camera was paid with taxpayer money, he was entitled to it.

The suspect also told police he was going to take it because he wasn’t sure the camera would survive the night.

During the questioning, an individual with a shopping cart with red light camera equipment inside it approached police. That person told police that another man who was with Baker abandoned the cart.

Police took the camera equipment and wiring in along with Baker.

Charges are pending further investigation.
